Employee Highlight – Joan Drake

We are proud of our employees and the pride and care they take producing your orders and want to share their stories with you.

Each month we highlight one of our employees and the department they work in! You will get a look behind-the-scenes here at the lab, and get to know one of our own a little bit better.

Technology has changed over the years, but one thing that has not changed is the foundation of our business – great color! The passion for excellence in color has been instilled and led by founder, Wayne Haub. H&H’s industry reputation for excellence in color has stood for nearly 50 years.

We are happy to introduce you to Joan Drake! Joan’s knowledge and expertise in color call has been an important constant for us for nearly 36 years!

Joan Drake – Color Call Department

What was your position when you first came to H&H?

I was a color caller. I started in 1984. I am right at 36 years in January 2020, so 36 seasons!

How have things changed in the industry since you first started at H&H?

It was all film for many years. I am so glad that we don’t do film anymore. With the digital process, you can correct so many things to make a photograph look good. Before, with film, you could only change a few things. It’s just a lot easier.

It was much slower back then. One order could be in the lab for a month. I learned how to color call the “old” way. I learned with a filter pack. You had to add and take away filters to make a photo look right. But you really got the basic understanding about the process! I can remember when paper came on big rolls. You had to roll off the amount you wanted for each print, and then cut it down to size. Now it comes cut. Everything works so much better.

Where did you work before coming to H&H?

I worked at Associated Photographers before coming to the H&H Color Lab. There used to be several people at H&H that came from Associated. I worked in color call there, as well.

What is it about your job that you love?

I do love my job. I am always trying to do the best I can, to make sure our customers are happy. I know people can get photographs from other companies that don’t look great. My job is to make sure that the photos from H&H look their very best.

How many people are in the color calling department?

We have about nine people, including the night shift.

How have the lean processes affected your department?

Overall, it has helped a lot. It took out a lot of steps. It has eliminated processes, as well as actual physical walking steps to get an order done. So we became much more efficient. I think it has been helpful overall.

Tell me a little about your hobbies and family.

I like to read a lot. I also enjoy action and horror movies. I like “The Walking Dead”…that’s my favorite! I like the John Wick movies and I love the Marvel super hero movies.

I have two daughters, four grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. I enjoy spending time with them. There are a lot of boys in the family, so we have a lot of fun and stay busy.

We currently have two dogs, both Labrador mixes. I also love English bull dogs and have had eight of those. I have had a basset hound too.
